Great Sand Dunes National Park

How to get there

View from close to the Park entrance

Great Sand Dunes National Park is located 35 miles northeast of Alamosa,Colorado, reached by US Highway 160 and Colorado Highway 150 from the south. or from Colorado Highway 17 and County Six Mile Lane from the west and north.

The Sand Dunes can be seen for many miles away over the flat valley floor and at first it's a well is that it sort of feeling. Just looking like a pale bar against the mountain backdrop, but as you get closer the dunes appear larger and larger until you get really close when you can appreciate their true scale.

Beware in particular if driving from the North, it's a long, dull, dead straight road and very easy to break the speed limit, we came across a speed trap on the road so it may be a favourite place...
