Hiking up is fun, but hard work!
|
Unlike many National Parks there isn't a huge amount of activities to fill your visit, to borrow a famous Monty Python sketch, you've got sand, sand, sand and more sand!
Unlike the delicate dunes of some shorelines, these hearty mounds can stand all the foot punishment you can give. It's not easy walking. The view's worth the effort, as is the fun when coming down. People run down, roll down, snowboard and ski down, even in summertime. If you fall, the mush makes for a soft (or at least semi soft) landing.
The most popular activity is a hike to "High Dune" and for those that don't fancy the full ascent there are lots and lots of smaller dunes to climb up... and for children (and not so children) a nice wide expanse of flat sand right by the Visitor Center before you get into the dunes proper.
In the Spring and Summer Medano creek affords opportunity to make sand castles and other more "beach" type sand activities...
